Default Re: New to Java, Required certification

    Hello Everyone,

My background is in Mechanical engineering and have been working in the field for a few years. I do not particularly like the field and would like to make a transition to programming as it is something that I think I would enjoy more than engineering consultation. I have started learning the basics of java and have enrolled in an introductory java course at a nearby college.
I wanted to know a little bit about the job market for java developers and what qualifications/skills employers look for. It would be highly helpful if I could get an idea from an unbiased group rather than a career counselor at a college trying to sell me courses.
With this information I can better align my preparation and education for a future career in Java.

Thank you for all your help,
    Ginni Dorka

    Hi Ginni,
the things I look for in resumes/CVs most, are the practical experiences. Years in programming, participated projects, frameworks used etc. I hardly look at the formal education parts. Programming is (nearly) all about experience. I've seen certified programmers, who couldn't code their ass out of a for loop :)
So my suggestion is, that you should get as much practical experience as possible to back up your theoretical knowledge.
    Regards,
    Phil

    Hello Phil,

Thank you very much for the quick reply.
I am just starting the preparation phase and have registered in the following course: Java Introduction. There are also a few other courses offered at the university: Courses. Do you think you could take a look at the list an perhaps suggest course that look like they would be good for learning.

    Thanks,
    Ginni Dorka
