Question Java Game Development, How and Why?

Ok, so first a little background details, when i was around 8 i started using GML, its a built in scripting language of the software "Game Maker", i did this for a few years on and off until i master'd most of it, then i moved on to dark basic, to get an idea of what text based programming was like, i liked it, and started learning c++, i wrote a few text based games, and then about a month later i wrote my first roguelike, now its 2012, I am 16, in college, and I am learning c#/XNA and c++/SFML, i want to know a few things about java, because i really do not know anything about it.

-I have seen people wright good games in pure java ( Using eclipse IDE ), is this possible? or does java need a graphics api like sdl for C++?
-Is it worth it? It seem's to be all the hype these day's, mine craft seem's to of inspired lots of kids to start playing with java
-When will it become obsolete? I'v seen allot of forum threads around the internet, and all of them seem to argue that c++ will last for a much longer time, Is this true?
-I know C# fairly well, i can do most things on my own and fix my own problems, will it be fairly easy to make the transfer over to java, and start working on some basic graphics/games?

    Thanks allot

Please stop bumping your thread- not only is it fairly obnoxious, it also makes it seem like your thread is getting more replies, which will cause people to assume you're already receiving answers, so they'll avoid checking it out.

The basic Java stuff (Swing, or Eclipses SWT) interact with the underlying graphics of the OS they are on, so presumably already installed. 3D stuff I think generally requires a dll installed, though this may already be the case. Depends on the system. So it depends what you want to do and what framework you want to build on. SDL is only a front end for various OS specific engines (usually OpenGL).

    That's entirely up to you.
I've been working in Java for over 10 years, so hardly a flash in the pan.
For gaming purposes so long as the JRE is available your game will be useable.

How long is a piece of string?
In other words a rather silly question.
C++ is no use (well, incredibly fragile) for things like web development, for example.
Don't expect Java to vanish anytime soon.

    So write in C#?
If you want to learn Java then learn Java.
It has a similar syntax, but then so do a lot of languages.
The devil is in the details.
Please do not ask for code as refusal often offends.

You've pretty much answered your own question here. Java does have a bunch of frameworks available (libgdx, LWJGL, JMonkeyEngine, etc) to help you do some pretty amazing stuff, but the starting point is pure Java.

Is what worth what? You're on a Java forum, so obviously people here will say it's worth taking the time to learn. I'm not sure what kind of answer you're looking for here.

There's no real way to tell. But it could be argued that languages are heading away from bare-metal programming and towards higher-level languages like Java. The answer to this question depends entirely on who you ask, and nobody is really completely correct. Frameworks like libgdx (which takes Java and outputs native code or html5) make things more complicated, because you can write in Java and get an output that will work anywhere. Consider mobile and web development, where Java is growing in popularity, and it's pretty hard to make a claim in any direction. Java is easier to maintain, so many companies are switching from legacy c++ to Java. And most high schools and universities teach Java and not c++, so more people are going to be familiar with it. But it's impossible to predict the future.

We can't really answer that. That's entirely up to you and your learning style.

Interesting that you chose to reply to one request instead of moving on and replying to the actual answers you got.

It's obnoxious for the reasons I outlined already, plus it makes you seem impatient. For more info, I suggest reading this and this.

But like I said, move past it and let's talk about your actual questions now.
