another one... "hi everyone"

Hi everyone, I’m 23 and live in Switzerland.
I work as a "support engineer" and I started a continuing education this year.
Goal is to change from "support engineer" to "application development".
JAVA, C, C++, C#... we will see.

I started with java 1 month ago with a short video training and two books.
Still need a lot of help. If I have a problem I take my books or search on the internet for a solution or ideas.
I hope the community here can help me with the kind of problems a “simple book” or the internet can’t. And also “beginner problems” or “comprehension/understanding problems“…

What books have you purchased? How do you like them?

First I bought "Java ist auch eine Insel" (in English: "Java is an island too") for self-study, but I had too much problems. The book is just theory with a lot of background information and only a few (simple?) examples. Without an appropriate technical background it was difficult to understand. The book is more a reference or manual for java.

After this I bought a beginners video training, “Einstieg in Java” (“Introduction to Java”) and a beginners book, “Einstieg in Java 6” (“Introduction to Java 6”). Parallel I watched a part in the video training and after read the same part in the book. This helped me a lot to understand the basics.

Now I work with “Java is an island too” as manual. If I have a problem or something is unclear I try to find a solution in my book and look for examples on the internet.

The video training and the beginners book are handy/proper to learn the basics. Easy to understand.
“Java is an island too” works perfect as a manual or reference with a lot of background information or to recap something. A really good book as manual/reference, not for beginners or for self-study.
