Java Programming - Comprehensive Concepts and Techniques is the book I used.
It could be a bit tough if you don't have a basic understanding of object oriented design.

Simple Program Design - A Step-by-Step Approach by Lesley Anne Robertson is an excellent book for beginners. It is very simple to understand. Although it doesn't implement any specific programming language it gives you a solid foundation and understanding before you start to learn a specific language.
Sorry, I only speak machine language. Yes or a No?
