    Default Spam... (off topic)

Yesterday there was a ton of spam from some guys posting Japanese articles on random topics... I'm sure that the staff has already taken care of them but I'm wondering what their motive is and how to prevent it... Do you think that the spammers are some random noobs who are bored and just want to waste time by posting a bunch of crap on a forum? Or maybe they're from competing java forums and they want to spam ours up and make it look bad? Also what do you think we should do about it? Should we wait for it to happen and then take actions? Or should we make some kind of restriction that needs moderators to approve posts from members with less than a certain amount of posts? Maybe make users confirm their emails before they can post?

What are your thoughts on this?

See the discussion here: Fighting spam

We're doing the best we can. But the admin (the guy in charge of the whole site, who has more powers than the moderators) doesn't seem to be very involved in the site anymore, so it's a losing battle. There really isn't much we can do except ban the spammers after they post. The admin might be able to put more aggressive anti-spam measures in place (see the above discussion for some examples), but like I said, he doesn't seem very interested in doing so.

If he's no longer interested in the site and only interested in monetizing it shouldn't he just make some of you guys admins and allow you guys to develop the site more? And has anyone thought of creating a new site so you guys (current staff(who cares about the forum)) have more control over it?

I don't want to comment on the admin's motives. I'm not sure what else he has going on, and really, what he does with the site is up to him.

Many of us do hang out on other forums, StackOverflow, etc.

Don't ignore stackoverflow. You don't have to post there, but it is a rich source of -correct- answers to many common and uncommon problems/questions. When I Google something, I always look at the stackoverflow results first.

The good part of SO is that good answers tend to bubble upwards. The voting system is perfect. Unlike a forum where a question is answered by noobs telling lies and bullshit, only to find the correct answer at page 4...

Yep. But on the other hand that perfect voting system is also built for machines and not humans. Its quite a screwed up mind-switch to get into answering questions there because you have to let go of all notions of what is "correct"; on SO it is standard operating procedure to spoonfeed code since its not really about helping people but about creating a repository of questions with correct answers.

That's what I used to think, and it really bothered me. However, after spending some time there, it looks like homework dumps are downvoted to oblivion and completely removed from the site within a couple minutes of being posted. You still get some users spoonfeeding answers, but for the most part the questions have to show at least a little initiative.

StackOverflow is far from perfect, and in fact I still prefer forums, but it's not as bad as I thought it was. Especially compared to the dregs of the LinkedIn Java groups. Ugh...

Correct, that's the robotic precision of it. Don't get me wrong, I like SO because it is darned efficient. Yet I also like idle banter and SO model does not promote providing understanding; the true fix of all problems.

This is because SO is not a forum. It was never meant to be. SO and this forum are two different sources of information, each with their own pros and cons.

Yeah well this forum is better. Why? Because you can go from the topic of spam to defining what SO is. Derailing ftw!

I wanted to downvote your reply, but the forum won't let me. We better continue this on SO, so I can downvote you :)

We can't SufMan, SO is not a forum.
