    Default How to ask someone to marry you in Java?

    Hey guys, I have a random question. I'm a lady who has been with a guy for four years. I have started to consider marriage but he has not yet popped the question. Instead of waiting around to see if he may eventually ask me, I would rather take the iniative and ask him. My guy likes to write android games and is currently using a version of Java. I am thinking about doing something with Java. My question is this: is there a way to write 'will you marry me ,' in Java/ code? Any suggestions would help. Thanks

    Hi,

    there might be multiple possibilities. But what do you want to get?
    - Some Java code that does not really do something useful. But when somone reads the code, then he will see that question?
    - Some application (written in Java) which will ask him?

    The first thing could be quite interesting but it can easily end with a lot of work. It could be nice to have some object oriented design in which you can describe thing you did in the past and maybe what you both dream about. Or it could be quite simple if you have classes like girlfriend / boyfriend / wife / husband and then write some code that converts or casts a girlfriend variable (which could have your name) to wife and a boyfriend variable (which has the name of your friend) to husband ... And then the question could be something like "The cast from girlfriend to wife works for me ... does the cast from boyfriend to husband work for you?"

    The other idea would be just an app that prints something. It could be possible to follow some introduction to create such an application. So the first thing could be a simple "Will you marry me?" HelloWorld application .... But you could make it more or more complex... But that is not really a java question then. And you might find it easier to create a video or something like that which could be shown on any device. (Which would even be better, because you have something device indipendend. Who knows if you can start an android application you write today in 10 years?)

    Just my thoughts about this idea. I hope it helped a little bit.

    With kind regards,

    Konrad

    This is awesome.

    Like kneitzel said, there are a bunch of ways you could do this. The simplest way would be to write a "hello world" program that prints out your message for you. Hello world programs are traditionally the first program you write in a language you're trying to learn: Hello world program - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Something like:

    Java Code:
    public class Proposal{
       public static void main(String... args){
          System.out.println("Will you marry me?");
       }
    }
    That will just print out the message. You could spruce it up by taking input (so he has to type yes or no) or by showing a message box or something. Then you could get him to either look at your code (hey I've been trying to learn programming, can you look at my code?) or get him to run your program somehow.

    You might also try to write a simple Android app instead of something that runs on a computer.

    But I wouldn't confine yourself to Java. There are examples of people who have used little games to propose. Do a google search of something like "indie game marriage proposal" for a bunch of results. And there are a bunch of ways for a non-programmer to make a game: Game Maker, twine, etc.

    I'd be curious to hear about what you come up with, so keep us posted!

    Remember it's supposed to be on Android eh, I don't think a System.out is going to do anything there.

    I don't think she specified that it has to be Android, but yeah, my example was the most basic Java thing I could think of, and like I said it'll only really run on a computer.

    Putting together a little Android game would be pretty cool, but it will also be much more involved, especially if she really wants to do it in Java. That's why I pointed out other options for non-programmers.

    In the end it's up to OP whether she feels like getting her hands dirty with programming or is more comfortable using a game making program to make it easier to put together a little game without any programming.

    Agreed. And indeed after washing out my eyes, there is no mention of the target platform this has to run on. I'll have a firm word with my brain on that subject.

    *stumbles out the door*

    A muffled yet loud discussion is audible coming from the other room. Certain segments of sentences can be understood, ranging from "what the F brain!?" to "... sleep and come back fresh...". The discussion ends with two loud bangs of opposite doors slamming shut and an eerie silence returns to the household, only to be moments later broken by the tune from the Twilight Zone coming from a broken radio left forgotten in the corner.

    To everyone whom replied: I thank you all kindly. I did not specify where it would be run. I apologize. Either computer or android phone. I like what Kevinworkman was saying and may go with something like that.

    This topic reminds me of this very old Reddit/r/Java post: Happy Valentine's Day! : java ;)
