And that isn't enough for you to set the default program?

Oh, but is PowerPoint even installed or have you uninstalled it inadvertently?

Indeed Powerpoint is not installed, or the office installer would have set up the content-type binding between the files and the program. That is really Windows 101 stuff.

I don't see anything about WHERE that file was saved. I can also create powerpoint files on my office computer, take them home and then fail to open them since I don't have it there (I'm a LibreOffice guy).

But okay, PPT can be installed. But the binding between PPT files and powerpoint can still be non-existent in Windows - that's still Windows 101 stuff. PPT files don't open in Notepad just like that either, you have to tell Windows to do that. Otherwise it will automatically popup with the "I don't know how to open this" dialog and ask you to choose a program.

ok, so i have powerpoint b/c i can go and open one on my computer. after i saved it and then go back and look at it again, it auto converted it to a notepad file for no reason. ALSO, i used CCleaner and found a lot of registry errors regarding Microsoft Office. I deleted them, but the problem is still there. this happens with word too, i saved it, go back and look at it and it became a wordpad file.

Is it possible that you are (mistakenly) saving the file as a web document? I sometimes run into that with Excel. I choose Save As... and the file type at the bottom sometimes defaults to Web Page, even thought the file extension is .xlsx.

See if you can open Powerpoint, then File|Open it from there, then save it as a Powerpoint document, and not a web page.

    Hope that helps,

    Shane
