Default What books do you recommend for beginners in java / android game development?

    Hey everyone,

My name is Jon and I am trying to get into java / android development, but I don't know which books are the BEST to use. I went to college for Game Design & Development, but ran into a financial issue so I now am going to teach myself and I want to be able to make website java games, android, iPhone, and Ouya games but I am unsure which books are the BEST out there. So I thought I would come here and see if anyone could help me. If you can I thank you in advance :)

I have done some research on books I think are good for beginners and I came across the following. If you find any of these good or bad please let me know. Thanks you for your time! :)

Thanks for looking at my forum. I have looked at some of "TheNewBoston" youtube videos and they do help. However I would like to have book to reference to as well to give me more information if I don't find them through videos :) Thanks for the suggestion though!

Head First Java is fantastic and I am sure most people here would agree.
I found Java How to Program by Deitel early objects also great. These are for Java beginners great pick ups.
As for specific android game development I'm not familiar with any books

Which version of Head First Java? Any particular year of publication?
I will look into "Java How to Program".

    Thanks for your help! :D

EDIT: I looked into the Java How to Program and for it being $100+ I feel its going to be worth it.

I have the Feb 2005 publication; the 2nd Edition I think, I don't know if there are newer ones.

Uh, what exactly is that javascript book doing in the list?

Other than that - there is no need to ask this question. When judging the value of a book, the Amazon.com user reviews have never ever let me down yet. Take the time to read through them and you'll soon find out which book is great and which one is a turd.

Head First Java is indeed a great book - with some mistakes in the code samples in the book itself, like most books. Sometimes I wonder if that was done on purpose so you can't dumbly copy over what is in the book and not try to understand it - you have to, because you have to fix the mistakes before stuff will work.

I already did search online through select engines, but I figured maybe I would get a much solid reference from people here who actually do programming etc.

So do the people writing the reviews. Really, what's the next step? You go to other forums to confirm what is said in this one? When do you trust information enough to go ahead and apply it? Make your life easier man, have a little confidence in your own judgement.
