    Default Win7 vs Linux

So, I recently built my first computer and I'm trying to decide on the right operating system. I can get Windows 7 Professional from my school for free. Likewise, I narrowed Linux distributions down to Linux Mint (which is really just a fresher Ubuntu). If I wasn't able to get a non-bootleg Windows for free, I'd definitely go with Linux. But, since money isn't an issue here, I've been looking at pros and cons of the two and frankly I can't decide. I'm very familiar with Windows, but I am somewhat familiar with Linux, too. Either way, I'm sure I can learn what I need. And since I'm primarily a Java developer, the OS won't matter much for that. So, anyone have any thoughts?

Go for Linux and then tell me what you think. I'm thinking of building a Linux box myself.

I'll second Linux. And if you have access to a legal Windows OS you can either dual boot, or run Windows within a virtual machine.

I'm thinking that if you don't know Linux then it's a chance to learn something. You are also protected from the OS going out of date and not having access to the newer version when you want it. I haven't used Mint but I've found the Ubuntu updates to be very good - much more frequent than Windows, don't require a restart to apply and don't have surprises like breaking your system.

Well then, I think I'll try out the Linux then. I have windows 7 on my laptop anyway. I could dual boot but I got a relatively small harddrive and decided I'd rather still with a single partition, but we'll see. I guess I can always wipe it later if I change my mind. Thanks. :P

Download VMware player (FREE!) and test it out. Its as easy as 1-2-3. I am currently using UBUNTU with VMware player, it works perfect had no problem.
