i would recommend Introduction to Java Programming.Comprehensive 9th Edition definitively my favorite
there is also Ivor Horton's Beginning Java (Java 7 Ed.) - I. Horton (Wrox, 2011) BBS
or you can try the head first labs approch and try head first java 2nd edition it's a good one for beginners

if this is your first language I would youtube thenewboston and look at his java tutorials (doesn't go super in depth but gets you going pretty quick). Then do deeper reading later for me doing then reading the details helped me under stand stuff but everyone is different.
