How to write a programming algorithm

Could someone please fill me in on the steps they take when writing an Algorithm for a computer program.

I have a basic idea, and have seen heaps of examples on the net, and in my text books, but just want to know what other people do.

An algorithm is just a series of steps. Are you asking about how to outline an algorithm? If so, flow charts are useful.

How detailed would you go? Bit more then this (just an example)...

-Display message on screen: "What is your favourite number"
-Prompt for user input from keyboard
-Store input into variable number
-Display message on screen: "Your favourite number is " 
-Get number from memory display on screen
-Display message:"sick one!"
