Hi, I'm currently working through a Stanford course thats aimed at complete newbies to Java and Eclipse and have so far found it very informative and enjoyable. I have tried just reading books in the past but have found the downloadable lectures and course materials in conjunction with the book the course requires much easier to get into than just reading from the book alone. The book required for the course is "Art And Science Of Java" and can be purchased from Amazon but is quite pricey, I found a copy using Google.
The link to the site for Stanford CS106a - Stanford School of Engineering - Stanford Engineering Everywhere
A newer 2012 course currently running, doesn't have all the materials available yet but has newer versions of the version of eclipse they use in the course - CS106A Programming Methodology
You can also get all of the course material through iTunes U.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the advice, I'll explore that option.
Thanks
