Default Challanges for a java beginner?

Starting to get in to java programming and i have heard the best way to learn is to try and develop some of your own apps?
What type of applications could a beginner try and make in order to develop their skills in java?

You could try and make an ATM simulator. It's what i did when I wanted to work more with classes. Other than that, you can come up with your own projects that interest you.

I don't know how advanced you are. You could make a store app, with different merchandise. Use this to learn Encapsulation and Inheritance.

I not an experienced programmer, but i remember one of my first projects was to test for palindromes. User enters whatever he wants, sentences, mathematical expressions, phrases, or a word. Make it for it removes the white spaces then test if it is a palindrome.

There is the Project Euler website that has lots of programming challenges. And you can always extend your answers to include a GUI and such if you like.

Whatever you come up with, start with it as a command line interface.
From there add a GUI, then say file io for data storage, replace that with a database eventually, finally (possibly) shift the whole thing onto a webapp.
Having a single app you can slowly extend as you pick up new aspects of Java can be helpful...of course it depends how quickly you get bored of a single application.
    :)
Please do not ask for code as refusal often offends.
