Java or....
I like the language of Java. For some reason I seem to be able to understand it better than say C++. I'm trying to pick one language and dive deep into it to get to a point where I can write software as a freelance programmer. I want to be able to create desktop and web applications. I would like to get into some mobile applications, and I want to be able to use a language that is fairly multipurpose in that I can go to a freelance job site and tackle many of the needs of many clients.
Does Java fit this description? I was thinking of possibly adding some C# into my tool box so that I have some .NET experience too.

Well ... All languages that you learn will be good if you want to be a freelance programmer. However java is used for android apps i think, so i guess its a good start.

Re: Java or....
I'm hoping for a few more answers. I need to make a decision on what language I'm going go with by tomorrow afternoon and I could really use some input from people actually out working in the field.

I don't think that the answers available have anything to do with forum as I doubt that there really is such a simple answer for this question. Your best bet is to concentrate on what is needed, but not to put on blinders and avoid learning other languages and skills. There are many web sites out there that tell which languages are the most popular based on many many different metrics, and this information may help you, but seriously, you can't go wrong with Java, or C/C++, or C#, or (fill in the blank here).
