Since you are a beginner in Java I suggest you the following books.

    1. Head First Java, 2nd Edition by Kathy Sierra, Bert Bates, Sierra Kathy, and Bates Bert

    2. Sams Teach Yourself Programming with Java in 24 Hours (4th Edition) by Rogers Cadenhead

    3. Java: A Beginner's Guide, 4th Ed. by Herbert Schildt

And the most important study material is the Suns' online tutorial. If you have internet access all the time, then I suggest you not to go with books initially, refer the Suns' tutorial.

    Sorry Eranga,

I think the Schildt book is crap.

I think it's depends on the reader right ;) Actually as you said Schildts' books is bit mess-up, the way it's presenting and so on. But we can grasp several.

The book is plain wrong in some parts. That's why I'd never suggest it.
