Main Operating System

I've only had a computer for four years (got it for Christmas freshman year). Before I got it I knew vaguely that there was another operating system (Mac), however I thought that it would be difficult to use and was obsolete. I didn't know that there were functional operating systems other than Windows.

Since then I have come to use GNU/Linux as my main operating system. I boot up in windows soley for the purpose of playing games (haven't had much luck with wine.

Since I have begun using GNU/Linux I have become fascinated at how many people are oblivious that it exists, as well as how it still manages to have less than 5% of the desktop market share.

With Mac's gain of the market share more people see it as a viable operating system (it's kind of an exponential growth).

So I was wondering what do you guys use as your main operating system?

Windows is my OS, because that's what we work at all my work locations. The choice has been made for me.

Windows for me. No need to worry about hundreds of versions as in open source OSs.

I alternate between Windows and GNU/Linux (mainly Ubuntu, sometimes SUSE) depending on what I'm doing, where I am, or which computer has blown up. Don't have a particular preference.

Been using Linux for almost 2 years, Currently using Ubuntu now and loving it. Just wanted something new after spending years at university using windows. I started with Fedora didn't like it, went to Open SUSE 10.2 and was better, how ever, I tried Ubuntu and even though I think its too brown, I'm loving it still.

I remember that in University I'm working on with Knoppix for the first time. Spend more that half an hour to mount/anmount the pen drive. Oh my god, it's a real mess.... :(

what version, how long ago? Knoppix comes in real handy when window fails.

I use a lot of OSX on my laptop, but my primary OS is Vista 32-bit on the desktop. I'm early on in my programming education, but so far I've found it easier to connect with school servers, etc. with Windows. Things like putty and winscp are crucial for me right now.

Actually when I working on with Linux and such open source OSs, seems really heck to me. Device mounting and all make mess-up me. But now seems it's really nice. Last few years develop drastically those areas. Waiting to get back there once I got a chance.

My personal laptop use Windows 7, and it runs very well actually. Especially compared to Windows Vista.

Server sided, I use Windows Server 2003, 2003 web edition and 2008 web edition.

So im pure Windows. I have a feeling there are tons of Linux fans over here thought. :p

I just haven't bothered setting myself up with Linux yet. My friend is windows genuine or something, and he gets 10 free life time licenses of all windows OS each year.

I hate Vista, because of two things.

1. Need more resource.
2. Difficult to workout a specific task, it's too complicated than previous versions.

And I think still server 2003 plays major role in web servers.

Yep, if you have a laptop, 1 core processor at 2.13Ghz, and 1GB of RAM. You will notice a huge difference when swapping from Windows Vista to Windows 7, thats for sure! :P

Although because I run some heavy programs, I had to upgrade my laptop to 2GB of RAM. I like the feeling and gui of Windows 7 more than Vista. :)

I'm using 2GB of ram on XP as well, having much memory make sens a lot. Major things I like to see is that in such a way I can work around multiple application at the same time. If you've enough memory that's all.

I have several computers.
I have a Compaq DL360 | 1U | server with 1 gig RAM and 2 36g SCSI3 Drives.
Windows 2000 Server, runs IIS/file and print
I have a Debian box running Apache
I have several laptops running various forms of Linux, Windows, and FreeDOS
My main laptop runs XP and Windows 7 Pro x64 dual boot.
Turon x2, 4gig RAM...
My main desktop runs Windows 7 Pro x64 but this is for gaming only.
Phenom II x3, 6gig RAM...
No they are not all turned on at the same time.
Then there are the kids PC's ones a Mac the other is Windows and the wife has an XP laptop.

Did I tell you about the ham radios? Just a couple :)
