Default What do you use java for?

I am curious as to what other people use Java to create. Though, since I started using Java, I have not created any large projects with it, I have come quite fond of it.

I was wondering what kind of projects you are working on with Java.

It's easy to write a code that computers can understand...
... the challenge is to write a code that humans can understand

Over the years I'm working on server side (back end) applications as well as desktop applications using Swing/AWT. Mobile applications should be the next step.

I use Java to break rocks and open cans.

Seriously though so far I just play with it and use it as an outlet for my insanity. I am writing a text based RPG in it along with trying to invent my own compression and encryption algorithms. Maybe make a few bucks when I'm done :P

I use Java for a client server application used by a car manufacturer. About 4000 classes, 2000 users worldwide.

I use Java (a clone but read on) for the control of a kidney dialysis process; people should be able to dialyse their blood during the night at home. I have an embedded Linux version (BuildRoot) available on a small Atmel processor that runs a clone of the Java virtual machine (JamVm) that runs with GNU's clone of the SE core classes (classpath, a stupid name if you'd ask me). That box is too small and too slow to run an X server so I can't run the Swing framework so I wrote my own component classes by using JNI on top of a direct frame buffer implementation (DirectFB). The entire shebang is running and going through its first tests. The hardware tests still fail ... (radiation tests).

    kind regards,

    Jos

    Default kind of projects

    Hi Mr. Beans

i try to write programs that simplify my life ex. an application for administer/organizing my huge dvd collection or a gui-driven sudoku solver and so on .. i think as long as you have fun with the code you write it doesn't matter what kind of project it is.

    Hi Mr Beans,

Despite being told by others that: "Java is a waste of time, and why try to reinvent the Wheel" and " I should learn something commercially useful like Delphi and Visual BASIC,"

I am using it to learn the practical concepts of object oriented methodology.

like I say to those people " I want to understand how the Wheel, the Axle, Gearbox and Engine work together, before I try to build a car" :D
:p I still have my "L" plates on...... directions and explanations are far more help than blaring your Horn! :p Watching:CS106a on YouTube \Reading The Art & Science of Java by Eric S Roberts

    Default Robotics

I use java and some C to make all kinds of robotics projects. I also use java to make models and things to help my with my science experiments. Other than that my college uses java for three semesters of programming so I must admit it is my first stop for most coding projects because I have alot of experience with it.
You know that line between genius and insanity? I am told I crossed it and went around back to insanity again.

    Post Java Projects

I began using Java in 1996, as a mentor for a group of students who were writing educational applets. Subsequently, I taught undergraduate and graduate Earth science students to program in Java, so they could use it for their research or teaching, and served as an instructor for a course on data structures for undergraduate computer science majors. I have also created databases of mineral physicists and meeting registration systems with JavaServer Pages as a front end.

Of all programming languages that I have used, Java is my favorite.

For embedded systems C/C++ would be the suitable. Handling registry level is must. And also I think that experience helps you a lot when you are learning high level languages like Java and so on.
