What do you expect? Somewhere something is wrong. Nobody can tell you what from a vague error message. Especially when you don't mention such vital information as which version of Eclipse, which version of Tomcat, how you set the server runtime up, etc.

I have Eclipse Java EE IDE for Web Developers Kepler Service Release 1 running on MAC os and Tomacat v7.
I am trying to check the functionalities of an already created project using DJDBC_CONNECTION_STRING
It is the first time for me to check a web service, so I am not sure what else needed to make the connection!

    "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina"

That is the start point of Tomcat.
If it can't find Catalina then something is wrong with your Tomcat, and nothing at all to do with your JDBC connection.
I'm going to guess (and it is a guess) that something has mucked up the classpath used by Tomcat to start up.

I would consider backing up your existing Tomcat and redeploying a fresh one and checking it starts up.
Then start adding back the bits that were on the one that doesn't work, launching Tomcat after each change.

its probably the Eclipse plugin giving that error though. It smells like the Eclipse runtime configuration is setup to look at the wrong directory for the Tomcat 7 installation.

In which case part of my point still stands...:)
    It's still not JDBC.

Actually it is a new instance I have just created after downloading Tomcat v7
Preferences -> Server -> Installed Runtimes to create a Tomcat installed runtime then I added a new server, and pointed the the installation directory to the downloaded source. still not sure about the JRE library (I have two options default and javase6) I tried both but with same result!
    What else I can do?

    Thanks.
