Default Package Explorer not showing any source folders

In one (and only one) of my workspaces, Package Explorer suddenly stopped showing any source folders, except in one project, which happened to be the only Maven project in the workspace. (Some of the other projects are actually Maven projects, but don't have the Maven nature.) I noticed this shortly after installing M2E. So I uninstalled M2E, but the problem persists.

    Any suggestions?

Still using Eclipse 3.7.2 because 4.x is still unusably buggy.

The problem affects new Java projects in the broken workspace, but not new Java projects in another workspace.
