Default Is it possible to add a thread for just a JPanel?

I basically have a Panel that I need to repaint a bunch of times inside of a method. However, the panel freezes (becomes unresponsive) for the duration of that method. I need a way to separate the GUI from that method so that I can repaint the GUI during that method without interference.

Lesson: Concurrency in Swing (The Java™ Tutorials > Creating a GUI With JFC/Swing)

And since this issue is more specific to Swing than to Threads and Synchronization, I shall move this thread.
