Use some println's to print out the values of some variables - see which one is null then backtrack to see where it should be instantiated. The exception tells you where the problem lies (in the authenticate method - although the line numbers don't match up to your code at all) - is service ever properly instantiated (it is passed as a reference and not available to assess in the code you posted)?
