How do I make a JMenuItem transparent so that the panel underneath it can be seen?

I guess you would need to make the menu time non-opaque and the make the JPopupMenu of the JMenu non-opaque as well.

So long as the menu's popup remains entirely inside the frame, otherwise a heavyweight popup will be used, and that can't be made transparent.
