Showing/Hiding groups with "triangle flippities"

At least, that's what David Pogue calls them, and I think it's safe to rely on him as a source of terminology.

Basically what I want is what most programs, including Netbeans (screenshot) do. A bunch of stuff is hidden and shown by toggling a parent container.

I would have expected there to be a JThing for this, but there does not appear to be.
I've also looked at trees, but can't find a way of editing them to include components rather than text.

My Component Tree Cell Renderer may give you some ideas, but do note that a renderer is not a "real" component, it's only a "rubber stamp" used for rendering (drawing). For your requirement, you may need to develop a companion Component tree cell editor if you're going to use JTree.

That's a pretty nice bit of code!

I'm unsure whether a normal Editor will work due to the level of control I want to have over the layout. I'm starting to think that adding and removing panels with a toggle button, although tedious, would be a better solution than a tree.

Perhaps I was not specific enough - I pretty much want exactly what Netbeans does, only the ability to specify the layout manually...
