Where to start?

Hello All, I am new here and wanted to ask a couple questions. Hopefully this is the correct spot, if not I apologizes. I am currently trying to learn Java, I have a little knowledge regarding the language and some others but I am a total newb. Do you have any suggestions on specific books to start with? Possibly ones you found beneficial? I learn best when I get involved with a project rather than just reading, but as I've tried to understand Java I've found that, doing so in this instance will leave me woefully behind the curve and I need to have at least a starting place.

One possible important note, I have a unique android app rolling around in my head and I would like to get it out. It involves the FM receiver, the voice to text converter and some other pretty specific features. Is Java the best language to pursue in order to write this app? (Obviously I know I have given very little so I understand if you need more info.)

If anyone can point me in the correct direction I would be most appreciative. Thank you for looking.
