Beginning with Android
Hey guys, I'm looking to expand into Androids mobile application building and I'm looking for some advice. Does anyone have any tips and suggestions for what books I should look into? The only requirement for a book is that it has to be available in PDF because I have some restrictions on getting a paper book out here (Deployed in Afghanistan).
I'm getting close to finishing the Java books I have and I think its time to make the jump into the Android world.
I posted similar posts on talkandroid.com and javaranch.- Use

tags when posting code. That way people don't want to stab their eyes out when trying to help you.

Whenever I'm looking into books I love to check out stack overflow, here is a link, perhaps it will help you out:

It seems that thread is rather old and a bunch of the links they posted are old or expired. I'm still scouring the internet for opinions but thanks for the help.

Not a book, and you have probably seen it, but developer.android.com has a lot of useful information from installation to simple tutorials and broader "guide" information.

Re: Beginning with Android
@vinci: you should really start a new thread and not hijack this one.
You need eclipse and the Android plugin and you're good to go.
For preequisite knowledge you should be able to program simple programs in Java. Ie be familiar with the basic syntax which is a lot easier to learn away from the Android machine. Other than that you can pick things up as you go along (Android apps are like Java applets in many ways: and people, way back when, used to learn Java writing applets.) Do be prepared to read the documentation and study the examples both at developer.android.com and something like Oracle's Tutorial for more general Java information.
(If you have no programming experience you should work through a decent general introduction to Java in book/pdf form first)

Re: Beginning with Android
Hi! It seems that you are a reasonably used to person in JAVA etc however I am just a noobi, but I have some video tutorials that cover android programming which I am using and its easy to use although I use it as a copier would copy anything without being able to really understand what is going on, so if you are interested in it send me a message and I'll give you the vids. All the best.
