Default What is the best front end to use with a java/jboss jms/hibernate ejb backend?

Cliffs: If you could choose a technology to implement a front end, what would it be? My best thought right now is JSP for ease of use, maintainability, and easy deployment.

backend consists of: Jboss 7.1 with JMS to EJB/hibernate on an oracle DB. Numerous java backend processes on multiple servers, communicating with each other via JMS as well.

The GUI needs to allow users to create, modify, start, delete, etc: types of tasks that will run for a few minutes up to a few days. The gui will have to display live metrics for the system by pulling data off JMS. A good example would be a website to track baseball statistics on every player live every day

NO to Eclipse RCP! and no to standalone java gui applets

what do you think about JSP or PHP? Anything better?

So what are you looking at? Web only, or regular clients? Have you considered GWT? Or JavaFX?

This is going to be another thread with 10 responses and 10 different opinions. It doesn't help to ask this, there is no best and everyone has their own preferences. You'll have to examine the huge list of possibilities and figure out for yourself what will work for you. The only thing I can say is: stay away from legacy technologies such as JSF 1.x and Struts 1. You can easily identify legacy technology by the need to put large piles of configuration in XML files without any other alternative. Other than that you're golden, I wish you good luck and lots of fun examining the many frameworks available to you.

Make several proofs of concept with different techs. You know soon enough which ones you will like and hate.

It can actually be either. This system has implemented Eclipse RCP which the developers have found to be very frustrating and hard to maintain, and it just doesn't look good

I've always preferred web clients, and JSP served us well a few years ago. However, I was wondering if using JSP is thought to be an aging tech or if it's still just as relevant today.

We're deploying in a VM to our customer so we have control over the browser / gui framework

I left this as an open ended question because I'm more looking to find out what frameworks are out there these days. I haven't looked into GWT or JavaFX, and I will do so now

Try a Google for "java web frameworks" and be shocked at the number of web application comparison articles you'll get that are -not- copies of each other. There are dozens of frameworks. I'm talking 60+ and more are added to the pile regularly. And now there is not only Java web frameworks but also Javascript based web frameworks which is the most recent breed.

The best I can do is mention which framework I happen to like the most: Apache Wicket. That in no way implies that I recommend you to go use that, I don't know it if will be the correct framework for you.
