Default Haven't Coded Java In 4 Years

Hi, I have a social media app I want to develop but it's been 4 years since I've coded Java. My background is junior developer level web app programming, experienced with WebSphere/Tomcat, Hibernate, SVN, Struts.

What's new in Java development in past 4 years?

To start I want to create and deploy a simple task management app (Create Read Update Display tasks), I'm thinking of a simple MVC app with POJOs and hand coded front end to get basics down first, MySQL backend, MyEclipse IDE, GIT. I'd like to deploy in cloud for free, Open Shift looks good.

Any suggestions on how to proceed or heads up on relevant technologies - IDEs, db, libraries, source control - appreciated.

In the past 4 years? Not much. JEE6 (and now JEE7), JSF 2.x, Java 7... JAX-RS (For RESTful webservices) is a very cool development, it is the cleanest standard API I've ever seen.

I wouldn't go for Struts (or Struts 2) anymore, I would rather look at Apache Wicket if I were you. If you want to use an ORM, go for JPA 2 with Hibernate as its provider. And as for the IDE, there is little reason anymore to use MyEclipse, the more recent versions of Eclipse are fully loaded and work quite well.

OpenShift IS free - up to a certain point. You have a limited number of slots and a limited amount of bandwidth. There have been rumblings around the net that perhaps at some point in time it won't be free indefinitely anymore, but I haven't seen any signals from official sources that this is going to happen any time soon.
