Question Image Processing: Where do I start?

I'm trying to look into doing some image processing in java. That is, I'm trying to program a robot that uses a camera to process images from a mounted camera.
For example one specific task would be to take an image of a tape square. By detecting the square of the specific color in java code, I would be able to find the size of the square, and, thereby, the distance that the robot is away from the square.

I have never worked on any code to do something similar to this. What are some things I could use to solve this problem? Where should I start?

Are you familiar with how to work with Images in java? See Lesson: Working with Images (The Java™ Tutorials > 2D Graphics)

I have worked with images, but never in great detail. Thank you. I will be sure to look over this tutorial before asking any further questions.

Okay, I understand all of these concepts when dealing with the loading, unloading, and basic modifying of images, but I'm wondering about how to detect an image's content. What if I wanted to detect a bright red circle somewhere in an image? How would I do that?

You need a good algorithm to do that, and oftentimes it isn't trivial. As always when it comes to writing algorithms, first write out how you would do it by hand, then translate to code. If you want specific help with this, I suggest you specify your requirements in a lot more detail. Further a) use your favorite internet search engine to help you out b) ImageJ is something you may wish to check out, as it has image processing tools that might help

I have started using the image processing toolbox on matlab...I'm thinking that my steps will be.
