First, learn how to use Subversion, CVS, and/or Git.

Install Eclipse and the svn/cvs/git plugins and learn how to use them.

Write a program of your own that you would enjoy writing or using. Use as many open-source libraries as possible.

If you notice any bugs or deficiencies in the libraries you're using, study them and contribute patches.
Get in the habit of using standard Java naming conventions!

Start from a simple thing you like, may be a simple text editor, a chat client and so on. Post it in a community like us, and request people to join with your project. I am sure you can find some.

I agreed, it's quite difficult to find people on such. You have to share the message with a huge community. Create a twitter account and share the updates. Create a Facebook page and share among friends. Post in community like reddit. Honestly, if you really want to get your project up into a certain level you must put more effort. :)

That's exactly why I suggest contributing to an existing project. The world doesn't need another calculator, chat program, or text editor. The only value in writing programs like that is in what you can personally learn by writing them. You're never going to attract other developers to those kinds of projects. If you want experience with cooperative programming, you'll have to either write something truly unique and amazing, or join an existing project.

Contributing on existing stuff is a good idea. Even though, developing a chat program (for example) also is a good idea, if you really could give a value through something which is still not available on existings. That's how you can give a value to your project. Novelty is a must. Then only you can attract other developers.
