    Default Console in Java 7?

I updated my computer to Java 7, and recently found that I get no console. I have tried running java straight from the command line, using both "java" and "C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\java.exe", and it won't work. It launches the Java .jar I gave it just fine, but the command window doesn't stay "inside" java. It gives me the prompt to enter DOS commands, but doesn't show any System.out.println() output. This worked fine with Java 6 SE. What am I doing wrong?

Are you confusing the "Search programs and files" box with the command prompt? First run cmd.exe

No, I said it was the DOS prompt. I have a shortcut that runs a JAR with certain parameters, and it used to open a console window that would show all of the output from the JAR. Ever since I updated to Java 7, however, it just flashes the console window and runs the JAR with no output (bad for bug testing). What is weird is that even if I switch it back to using Java 6 (while still having Java 7 installed), the window still doesn't stay open. I didn't change anything except the java.exe that the shortcut used.
