Default Handling Multi byte Character Strings

If I have a String containing complete path of file e.g. "/home/java/myprojects/filename.txt". Suppose I have a filename having multibyte characters how do I extract that filename from this string. what data type should I use to store those multi byte characters.

    Thanks

Leave it as a String; Strings are very well capable of storing all Unicode characters.

    kind regards,
