    Default increasing jvm heap space

I am trying to run a fairly data intensive program and i keep getting a JVM out of heap space error. I tried using a -Xmx 512m option but it still limits me to 256mb. I am using a machine with 2gb of ram and when i am running this program i have about 1.5gb free. Is there anyway to increase the heap size other than the -Xmx option?

Don't put a space between the -Xmx and 512m; your jvm should warn your about it; using the -Xmx flag is the way to go, there is no other way to specify the maximum heap size.

    kind regards,
