I am developing a web vacation request application using java and jsp.

There is a web page in the system that should allow a user to enter data in the textfields provided

e.g. name
role
start date
end date

Once the user enters data in each of the text fields and then clicks the button 'search' the corresponding results (stored in the MySQL database) should be shown in a text area below.

Any ideas how to do this?

Yep, use Servlets for that: the form data is sent to a Servlet; the Servlet searches your database (or uses another class for that) and the results are send back to the client (or instructs a JSP to do so). Tomcat is of tremendous help here.
