Well, seeing as how VBA is the "Application" version of Visual Basic (I.E. the version that is only available in, and applicable to, applications such as Word, Access, and Excel) there is no comparison.
As far as advantages of one over the other when comparing Java and VB6 (or better VB.Net), then it all depends on context.
Java is multiplatform, VB.Net is not (in practice, although in theory it is also suppossed to be) so, if what you writing is only ever going to be run on Windows, then that is an advantage for VB, otherwise it is an advantage for Java, as logic would say that an equally well programmed app will run better using the language that was designed on and for that OS (that isn't necessarily, true, however).
If most of a companies programmers only know Java and not VB, then Java has an advantage and vice-versa.
etc, etc,
We can go on like this all day. Figure out what it is you need to do, under what conditions, and then start looking at which gives the larger advantage (although they should not remain your only choices, of course).

It's not about convincing people.
It's about chosing technologies that are best suited to solving your problem.

Did he say "VBA" or "VB". You did read what I wrote about what VBA is, right? And if he wants VBA, then, I assume, VBA is applicable, in which case Java, probably, is not. But, seeing as how we don't know what is to be done, or under what conditions it is to be done, we can neither judge which is better, nor provide any kind of relevant argument for or against either one.

You are obviously failing to understand the sentences being posted by others in this thread.
