Over the last several years has no idea ever popped into your mind along the lines of "how would I...?" or "Wouldn't it be cool if...?" or "I'd really like a program that would...".

I'm sure you've had such ideas aplenty. They form one part of your answer.

Google will turn up n*10^6 others more or less reflecting the ideas occurring to other students similarly placed.

Finally your teachers may be helpful. Some ideas are great ... ideas! But there are always limitations (technical, financial, time). It would be good to take whatever you come up with and run it past your teachers to get their initial reaction about a project's feasibility.

Thanx but didnt ask for such a blunt reply....I wish to do a project which is new in some sense, otherwise there are lot of things which I could do, students repeat the projects of others and not once but many times, that is not what I wish to do.

    do what you want

(a general answer to a general question, which has nothing to do with java advanced topic subforum. maybe offtopic?)
"There is no foolproof thing; fools are too smart."
"Why can't you solve my Problem ?"

I didn't find his reply to be blunt at all but quite appropriate and helpful. Many will find your reply above to be somewhat demanding, and you may wish to modify this tone a bit should you wish to encourage others to help you further.

I wish to do a project which is new in some sense, otherwise there are lot of things which I could do, students repeat the projects of others and not once but many times, that is not what I wish to do.
I agree that your questions are very general. Most will tell you to do something that interests you most. The key is not the project per se; rather the key is your choosing a project yourself that allows you to maintain a decent level of interest throughout its completion.

    Much luck.

I don't know where you're from, but in Sweden (where I live) we're encouraged to think for ourselves and come up with our own ideas. Do you have people tell you what to eat for dinner and what clothes to wear as well?

Rock Way did not answer bluntly. Mmm.. I've got to think of a project for Honours too. ;) Well, I like graphics. My instructor likes graphics.. So, my project will probably include some graphics! :D Shiny and pretty.. But don't be fooled, OpenGL is not trivial. It's actually awsome. Then there's DirectX. :p Looked at it two years ago.. Not nice. Powerfull, but not nice. I don't know what to do with OpenGL yet.

A previous student implemented a C# system for introducing programming called Tiptop.

I know how you feel. It would be so dull to "do it again". I'm not sure if my University would allow that.

So, in your case: What do you like?

Eyes dwelling into the past are blind to what lies in the future. Step carefully.
