Do you have a time limit or anything? What is intermediate to you? What are some of your interests? One of our members(I forget who) ended up writing a jukebox program because he got tired of getting up every hour or so to change cd's.

Do you want to work on front end GUI type stuff or would you prefer to get complicated sort/search/database features under your belt?

Overall find some topic your interested in and try to write a program that works around that idea.

Thanks. Is there some website I can go to to get ideas?

I dont really have a time limit. Intermediate for me would be a project that wouldnt go in the Beginners forum. My interest is in making a unique application - not your usual "Hello World" application or asteroids game. GUI would be more to my liking.

My current interest is in XML and I come from a VB background. Its just that manipulating XML is so tiresome in java compared to VB that I havent followed that up.

    Any ideas are welcome.

write me a front end for a tool that searches log files for someting so admin does not have to write the tools or go find them or something.

Do my thinking for me in that we need to find what kind of log tool people actually have use for.

My recommendation is that you don't listen to us for any specific project, that you find a project that solves a problem that is currently vexing you or your family or your friends. There's nothing like a little extra motivation to make the project truly special.

Hey... what about World Peace? That would be an interesting sw project !!!

Really... I think (from my own experience) it would have to satisfy the following some of the following:
    • A topic/subject that I'm interested in/passionate about
    • A problem that I would like to solve (same as Fubarable suggested)
    • Recreate something in the physical world into a program (challenge to do it)
    • Invent/re-invent something that exists/doesn't exist to make it better/faster/nicer/simpler/etc.

    Luck,

So write a multi-user game that sends messages encoded in XML over an HTTP port.

    Later make it peer-to-peer.

I don't manipulate XML in Java. I use it more as tissue paper. Write it out, send it, read it in, forget about XML after that. Use once, throw away.

    Whats the railway reservation system?

As far as voice based do you have recognition software in mind?(I'm pretty sure that stuff can get pricey)

What would you want the application to do?

@pradnya: it's not considered good taste to hijack somebody's post. It would be better if you started a new post because your topic has nothing to do with the topic of the current OP post.

Woops. I didn't even realize pradnya wasnt the OP. I figured that the OP had picked that as a project

Write something that can recognize letters in an image. Like if you scan something, and you input the image in that program, it outputs text... which you can edit. Useful as well.

I was in your same predicament at one point. I ended up writing a GUI application to simulate an D&D world and it's economy. I had towns, towns had stores, stores had items and the prices fluctuated based on events in the world. I had buttons for each of the various events, and the ability to add towns, stores and items. I also had to determine the best method to save all the work etc.
