Whats next after core java
Hi Guys, I have learnt core java and now I want to learn further. I keep hearing terms like struts, servlets, JSPs, Hibernate, XML, java beans.

Can you tell me what should I pursue next & what should be the sequence. Becoz i picked up a book on struts last week & didnt understand anything.

Thanks!

what do you want to do? There are literally hundreds of major libraries and extensions.

Many of them, as you have found out, are not easy to pick up.

I personally can't stand J2EE and all the stuff that is used to make up J2EE. Its too complex, heavy, hard to learn, and makes your code ugly. All IMHO, of course. I will not accept a job offer that requires me to use J2EE, and have done so many times.

If you are going to use one of the more complex technologies, I strongly recommend that you use NetBeans or Eclipse, which can simplify a lot of the tedium. Others here disagree, and think you learn more by slogging through the cruft. That's OK, but I want to learn to cook tandori chicken, not how to raise the chicken, slaughter it, and get rid of the feathers.

javax.crypto
Try Jason Weiss' book on javax.crypto + Marty Hall on Servlets. I agree with ftr on J2EE, for the same reasons, but after reading Core Servlets today I can see why some of the methodology is needful in massive scaled applications. Try to pick some area in which you have a natural interest, then write a full-blown application to cover the entire problem domain.

Massive scaled applications, to support tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of users is a different world.

Very little of what you use building normal applications is applicable. Its so different, don't worry about it.

If you get to be even digg or slashdot sized, you'll find you have lots of money, and really big, hard problems.

my personal views are :-
1) prepare yourself for SCJP examination
2) start learning from
-> JDBC -> RMI -> Servlets -> JSP -> Struts
in sequence
