i am doing Master of Computer Science (1st semester) We are asked to do a project in java(we know core java & adv. java) Plz suggest me some projects.

Use something, anything, that you are either interested in or have some real-world experience in.

It's much better to deal with a real world requirement/application. Then you can have a grate validation for your project. So gather all of you and discuss a thing which can be more valuable those days.

Master of Science should have plenty of code base for beginner projects. Advice on selecting thesis subject has proven track record doing better in area in which student has some natural interest.

Yup. . . I have a few suggestion you can start but still you need to make a research on how and what functions it will need. A "Online Enrolment and School System" which includes enrolment, viewing of taken subjects, the curriculum, current load of subjects and reservations for the freshmens. You can also add some description for instructors and their schedule, and some email perhaps for the employees and students. ^_^ I guest thats a good proposal for a MS studies. ^_^
