dear java comrades

what is the meaning of the code -Djava.security.policy=applet.policy
under properties, run. Is this code valid on a mac computer. I can not find this applet.policy file on my mac. A browser suppose to pick up this file and read permissions? I think here lies my applet problem: access denied (java.io.FilePermission Imagestore read).
