Hello dubdubdub.
I am currently using the same book. I recommend that you use Netbeans. It's on the book's CD. It has an text output window where, unlike DOS, you can scroll through all the output without it disappearing. Give it a try.
Output is displayed when you run or debug. I haven't managed to get DOS to give output, but if you start using Swing, that won't be needed.
